The Valkyrians
The Helsinki-resident ska-rocksteady-reggae band The Valkyrians began performing
in the year 2002. Since then they have caused spectators to dance and shout
wildly on an intense basis. The hot ska summer of 2006 started at Provinssirock
festival, but during the last years The Valkyrians have entertained the public
all over Finland. The skanking foot trails lead to Club Pharaoh, in Helsinki,
where the band played as a house band during winter 2004-2005.
The Valkyrians´ musical inspiration stems from 60´s Jamaican ska
& rocksteady, and from the British 2 Tone releases of the 70´s and
80´s. To all these spices the band adds a spoonful of their own brilliant
pop sensibility which results as an extremely positive and energetic dance
music.
In September 2004 The Valkyrians published their debut-EP Miracle which included
4 top-notch ska-rocksteady tracks. The Valkyrians has conquered a deserved
status on the forefront of the Finnish musical scene. As a proof there are
several high praised live reviews and this year´s Femma-prize in the
category of best dance act.
The Valkyrians´ debut album High and Mighty was released the 6th of
September. The album includes 9 top-notch own tunes: Valkyrian Ska, Do You
Really Wanna Know, Coming on Time, Warmth and Shelter, Woman, Too Hot, Miracle,
Rain is the Same and I Don't Wanna Go Home, plus 3 respectable cover songs:
Rankin' Fullstop, Hooligans ja Conqueror. The first single, Ranking Fullstop,
skanked in the finnish top charts for a month.
The Beat Of Our Street is the name of the VALKYRIANS new album (released december 2009), a band which is currently considered to be Finlands smartest and most successful Ska-/Rocksteady outfit. The beats of their new songs do not seem to originate from the dark and nordic coolness of their homeland, but rather some street in Kingston with different music clubs, whose doors would open alternately.
Relaxed rocksteady beats, danceable ska beats, bubbling organs, warm string and harmony vocals or even some soul can be heard in the street. After their successful debut "High & Mighty", the Valkyrians took their time for this new album on which you can find many great and coherent songs. The simultaneously released vinyl LP will feature the vintage sound of this album even better
